The significance of Arabic language in Islam

The Arabic language stands as a foundational tool within Islam, akin to how the Salaf—the revered early Islamic scholars—utilized it to comprehend the Quran and the Sunnah. Just as the Salaf recognized the intrinsic connection between Arabic and the understanding of Islamic teachings, contemporary Muslims too must acknowledge the indispensable role of Arabic in unlocking the depths of religious knowledge. This paper delves into the profound significance of the Arabic language within Islam, particularly as a means to grasp the nuances embedded within the Quran and the Sunnah, drawing inspiration from the practices of the esteemed predecessors of the faith.

Throughout history, the spread of Islam has been accompanied by the dissemination of the Arabic language. Early Muslims, upon settling in regions where Arabic was not the native tongue, actively encouraged the adoption of Arabic by the local populace. This concerted effort resulted in the widespread usage of Arabic in regions such as Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Khurasan, and North Africa.

It is imperative for Muslims to prioritize the preservation and promotion of the Arabic language within their communities. By encouraging the learning of Arabic in homes and schools, future generations can develop a strong command of the language, thereby ensuring its continuity as the language of Islam. This not only facilitates a deeper understanding of the Quran, Sunnah, and the teachings of the early Islamic scholars but also fosters a sense of connection with the rich linguistic heritage of the faith.

The significance of Arabic extends beyond linguistic proficiency; it is intertwined with religious obligations within Islam. Understanding the Quran and Sunnah necessitates a command of Arabic, making it incumbent upon Muslims to acquire proficiency in the language. This duty is not only individual but also communal, emphasizing the collective responsibility of the Umma in preserving the linguistic integrity of Islam.

Learning the Arabic language has a profound impact on thinking, behavior, and religious obligations for several reasons:

Arabic is the language of the Quran and the Sunnah , the central religious text of Islam.

By learning Arabic, individuals gain direct access to these primary sources of Islamic teachings, allowing for a deeper understanding of religious concepts and principles.

Many religious concepts and terms in Islam have specific meanings and nuances that may not be fully captured in translation. By learning Arabic, individuals can grasp the subtleties of these concepts more accurately, leading to a deeper and more nuanced understanding of their faith.

For Muslims, understanding Arabic is essential for fulfilling certain religious duties, such as performing prayers, reciting Quranic verses, and participating in religious ceremonies. Mastery of Arabic enhances one’s ability to engage in these religious practices with sincerity and devotion.

This also has an effect, by making the companions and taabi’in resemble the first generations of this Ummah.

Understanding the Quran and the Sunnah is a fundamental obligation in Islam. This understanding requires proficiency in Arabic, and then acquiring the necessary means to fulfill this duty also becomes obligatory.

Umar ibn al-Khattab, one of the closest companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the second caliph of Islam, emphasized the importance of learning Arabic. He is reported to have said, “Learn the Arabic language, for it is part of your religion.” This hadith underscores the significance of Arabic as an integral aspect of Islamic faith and practice.

This saying  attributed to Umar ibn al-Khattab highlights the significance of learning Arabic in the context of understanding the Sunnah and the Quran which was  reported by Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shayba who said: ‘Isa Ibn Yunus reported to us from Thawr of ‘Umar Ibn Yazid that ‘Umar wrote to Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari رضي الله عنه and says:

“Learn the Sunnah and learn Arabic; learn the Quran in Arabic because it is Arabic. » Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari رضي الله عنه

Umar’s directive to Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari underscores the inseparable connection between the Arabic language and the foundational texts of Islam. Scholars have stressed the importance of Arabic proficiency in gaining a deeper understanding of Islamic texts and traditions. They have authored numerous works on Arabic grammar, syntax, and rhetoric to facilitate the study of Islamic sources in their original language.

The Arabic language occupies a central position in Islam, serving as a conduit for the transmission of religious knowledge and traditions. It is incumbent upon Muslims to uphold the sanctity of the Arabic language and actively work towards its preservation and propagation within their communities. By doing so, they not only honor the linguistic legacy of Islam but also ensure the continued accessibility and understanding of its sacred texts for generations to come.
